Mount Pellegrino, Sicily

This mountain has it all: hiking trails, prehistoric caves and a shrine to Palermo’s patron saint.

Northern Sicily’s answer to Etna, Monte Pellegrino was hailed by Goethe as the most beautiful promontory in the world. Visitor numbers reach their peak in the summer months, but the best time to go is October, when the combination of glowing sunsets and the first autumn breezes makes for a memorable experience.

The first port of call for most is the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia at the top of the mountain. Here, Palermitani pay their respects to their patron saint, who – legend has it – retired from society to live as a hermit in one of the mountain’s caves. Slightly further down, on the north-east side, you’ll find the Grotta d’Adaura, a series of prehistoric caves with wall engravings depicting human and animal figures. Also worth admiring from a distance – although closed to the public – is the pink neo-Gothic Castello Utveggio.

Monte Pellegrino is best seen on foot or by bike. For a more relaxed alternative, take the 806 bus from Palermo.
