Luigi Capuana House-Museum, Sicily

An hour’s drive from Catania, the Luigi Capuana House Museum celebrates the life of one of Sicily’s greatest writers.

The Luigi Capuana House Museum, where the author and his family once lived, is a must for all book lovers. As you make your way through the palazzo, you’ll come across several libraries, including one that’s home to the Esperanto collection of the late linguist Pietro Rizzo. See if you can spot a translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy among the many works.

You’ll find the museum proper on the second floor, its walls decorated by Capuana himself with newspaper cuttings and trompe-l’oeil murals. The author had many talents besides writing, so don’t be surprised when in addition to his books and writing desk, you spot his photography equipment and a document announcing his appointment as mayor of Mineo. If these exhibits pique your curiosity, be sure to speak to the museum staff, who have plenty of extra anecdotes to share.
