The Abay State Opera and Ballet Theater was founded in 1934 and after 5 years was awarded the status of an academic theatre.

In 1945, the theatre was named after the great Kazakh cultural figure Abay Kunanbayev in honour of the 100th anniversary of the poet. The theatre is of interest not only as a culture but also as an architectural object, which is a worthy decoration of Almaty.

The Kazakh State Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abay is one of the main theatre stages in Almaty. The theatre's repertoire includes opera performances, classical performances, theatrical performances, ballet performances and musical concerts. In total, the theatre's repertoire includes more than 35 opera and 40 ballet performances by Russian composers, as well as Russian and European countries.

In recent years, such famous operas as Tannhäuser, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Il Trovatore have appeared on its stage. The auditorium can accommodate 789 seats. About 200 ballet and opera performances are held annually, attended by over 70,000 spectators.
