This area is named after one of the seven gates to the old City of London and the site of Bishops Gate is still marked by a stone mitre on one of the buildings. It is a business-oriented sector, with 46,000 people working here, but less than 50 residents. This modern activity contrasts with the area’s Medieval history. For example, the 13th century St. Helen's Bishopsgate church has more monuments than any other church in London besides Westminster, and counts William Shakespeare among its past parishioners. A stained glass window of the playwright is a reminder that he worshipped there.
