Sobrino de Botín, Restaurant, Madrid

Restaurante Sobrino de Botín, founded in 1725, is the oldest restaurant in the world.

Restaurante Sobrino de Botín, founded in 1725, holds the illustrious title - according to the Guinness Book of Records – of being the oldest restaurant in the world. It’s a pretty impressive title, especially when considering that for much of its history it has been owned and run by the same family. It is currently run by the third generation of the González family – a family who has done everything in their power to maintain and preserve as many of the restaurants original features as possible. To this day the restaurant still retains its original wood stove, which has been roasting Botín's famed suckling pigs and lamb for nearly 400 years.

The restaurant is known not only for its historical value, but also for its exceptional Castilian cuisine. It's most famous for its roasted pig and lamb, but the menu also features a respectable array of classic Spanish dishes, including some excellent seasonally sourced seafood. The restaurant also offers guided tours of the premises before the dinner service begins where visitors can learn about the fascinating history of the building and indulge in a six-course meal to better appreciate Botín's culinary merits.
