Sforza Castle and Museums, Milan

The Sforza Castle is by far one of Milan’s most important attractions and one of the main landmarks of the city.

The Sforzesco Castle or Sforza Castle is by far one of Milan’s most important attractions. In its prime the castle was a symbol of wealth and power. Today the castle is a museum.

In 1358, the first duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti demanded a fortress. It was constructed and partially converted into a palatial residence. After the death of the Viscontis, the republic turned to Francesco Sforza for help. He declared himself the duke of Milan and rebuilt the castle.

However, for the following centuries the castle was abandoned and was in very bad condition. Just after Italian unification in 1861, architect Luca Beltrami restored the castle and ultimately saved it.

Today the castle has many courtyards and towers and is home to the Civic Museums. The Civic Museums contain artifacts, sculptures, paintings and instruments. The museums are spread out over many floors and courtyards. It is recommended to dedicate quite a few hours here to truly absorb the history!
