Ca’ Granda was constructed on the behalf of Francesco Sforza who wanted to bring together all the hospitals in Milan into a single central structure for the hospitalization and treatment of the sick, the Ospedale Maggiore.
The building was designed by Tuscan architect Pietro Averulino, also known as Filarate, beginning in 1456. After his death in 1469, the structure was later completed by Guiniforte Solari in a Gothic style.
In 1939, the hospital was transferred to a new location to house Milan’s university, Università Statale. After being partially destroyed in World War II, it has been renovated and rebuilt. The building has many beautiful architectural aspects such as arcades, arched windows, and courtyards.
