The former townhouse of Edouard André, and his well-known artist Nélie Jacquemart which was built in 1875 displays their  splendid collection of decorative arts, featuring some of the finest Italian art in France.

The Musée Jacquemart-Andre is an impressive private townhouse dating back to the Second Empire and owned by the Institut de France. Founded by art collector, Edouard Andre, its focal point is 18th century art masterpieces.

Edouard André, an heir to a Protestant banking family, married a well-known in 1881. He and his wife spent their fortune on acquiring works of art, which were exhibited in the mansion on Boulevard Haussmann, which was completed in 1875.

The couple travelled across Europe and the East to acquire rare works of art and furniture. They often took pleasure trips or stayed in spas for their health, which provide the opportunity for visits to auction rooms and expanding their vast collection. Their journeys to the Middle East included Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, from which they returned via Beirut, Constantinople and Athens.

You will find notable works from Italian Renaissance, French 18th-century Painting, The Flemish School, including artists like Fragonard, Botticelli, Van Dyck, Vigée-Lebrun, David and Uccello. Louis XV and Louis XVI-era furniture and objets d'art complete the collection.

Often compared to the Frick Collection in New York, the house has retained its character as a luxurious private residence. The museum shows you the rooms as they were lived in their original style during the 19th-century: reception rooms, an ornate staircase,  the winter garden room, and private apartments.
