The Galeries Lafayette is an upmarket French department store whose flagship is located on Boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, and which is the city's largest and most elegant department store.
The place is a shopper's paradise: from household appliances to children's toys, from tearooms to theatre reservations, not to mention a travel agency, shipping services and a post office. The store is famous for its fashion department, spread over four (enormous) floors with clothing and accessories from almost every designer you've ever heard of.
The shop hosts free fashion shows most Fridays in the afternoon. Complete with catwalk, these shows avoid haute couture cliches, and aim for people who really want to wear what they see. And as it's the little things that can really make an outfit, it's a welcome change to see accessories getting some of the limelight: jewellery, bags, shoes, hats...From DKNY streetwear to Cerruti evening wear, the shows feature a range of designers, labels and styles. Seats are limited, you definitely need to book in advance.
It doesn’t just stop there, with two other buildings - one for men’s clothing, and another for gourmet delights and designer homeward, featuring a very well-stocked wine cave.
Going to the store, even if you're not in for a shopping spree. Its magnificent 33 meters high Art Nouveau coupole elaborated in metal and painted glass with floral motifs is definitely worth checking out.
