The National Theatre in Munich is appreciated as one of the most magnificent opera houses in the world. The theatre first opened in 1818 but has been destroyed twice: once by a fire, and then it was bombed during the Second World War. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt and its original splendour restored.
The National Theatre has staged the premieres of operas by Wagner, Strauss, Reger and Orff. Nowadays, it continues to stage a number of important premieres.
