A symbol of Romanian independence, the original Arch of Triumph was built in 1878 for the Romanian Army to march under, a symbolic act that takes place every year on December 1st. It was altered several times, culminating in an arch built of deva granite in 1936. The neoclassical design was loosely modelled on the Arch de Triomphe in Paris, but the sculptures are by Romanian artists including Dimitrie Paciurea. Take the internal staircase if you want a spectacular view of Bucharest. There’s also a small museum that includes original photos of the previous versions of the arch.
