Vacaresti Park Nature Reserve, Bucharest

The swampy land here began as a hydro-technical project and artificial lake in Communist Romania, but after the fall of Communism in 1989, the project was abandoned and nature took over.

The swampy land here began as a hydro-technical project and artificial lake in Communist Romania, but after the fall of Communism in 1989, the project was abandoned and nature took over. Now it attracts hundreds of species of birds, mammals and plants - even otters, which are close to extinction. To explore, you can either use the 5km track that surrounds the park, or the smaller footpaths that criss-cross through it.
