The Ara as it was, Exhibition, Museo dell'Ara Pacis, Rome: 14 October 2016 - 25 October 2019

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

Emperor Augustus himself gives you a tour around the Ara Pacis to immerse you in ancient Rome.

The Ara Pacis, an altar dedicated to the Roman goddess Pax, comes alive again thanks to virtual reality technology and 3D imaging. You’ll be given virtual reality visors which will make the altar  appear as it did in the time of Emperor Augustus (i.e. 9 B.C). You can even watch a sacrifice take place on the altar as well as taking an overhead tour of the entire Campo Marzio. A combination of augmented reality imaging and real actors and artefacts, show how the past, present and future can  come together. Normally exhibitions and museums take us closer to the past, but this is a unique opportunity to momentarily live the past in the present.
