The Baths of Caracalla were public baths in Rome built from 212 to 217 AD during the reigns of Emperor Caracalla and Emperor Setpimius Severus.  The most famous of all Roman baths, the baths of Caracalla were an important part of Roman society.

Located on the ancient Appian way, this archaeological accomplishment required a lot of strength and effort to be constructed.  Approximately, 600 marble workers, 6,000 tradesmen, and 13,000 prisoners of war were used to complete this colossal bath.

Inside the baths were three different bathing rooms.  The frigidarium was the cold pool, the tepidarium was the warm pool, and the caldarium was the hot pool.  The Romans also created a heating system called the hypocaust which heated the floors and walls.  Surrounding the frigidarium was the Palaestra, a gymnasium where games and competitions took place.  Lastly, there was a Natatio which was a large swimming pool for recreational activities.

The baths were a very functional aspect of Romans’ daily lives.  The majority of Romans lived in unsanitary areas where clean running water was scarce so the baths were their way of cleaning.  As well, the baths were a place for Romans to meet other people and partake in activities.

The Baths of Caracalla are an attraction you must see!  The ancient ruins provide us with a window into the lives of the Romans and their world.
