Go to the Ljubljana Castle and explore ten centuries of history!
The Ljubljana Castle has become the most prominent edifice in the skyline of the city. The castle, which crowns Castle Hill, has a long and complicated history since its construction in the 11th century. Initially intended to be a defense fortress in the Middle Ages, the castle later became an arsenal and military hospital, and it was used as a prison by the Austrian Empire in 1815, and again during World War II.
The Castle belonged to different royal houses, including the Sponheim, Carniola and the Habsburg, until it was finally acquired by the city at the beginning of the 20th century. The idea was to reconvert it into a museum, but the project fell through and it became a residence for poor families instead, until restoration works began in 1963. Today, the castle is one of the main attractions in the city of Ljubljana.
