The Alcázar of Toledo is a stone fortification in the highest part of the Spanish city which gives you a breathtaking view.
Built on the site of a third century Roman palace, this fortification has been destroyed and rebuilt throughout the centuries. In the 16th-century it was completely rebuilt by King Carlos V who intended to use it as a Renaissance style royal palace.
During the civil war in 1936, the fortification was heavily destroyed again. Reconstruction began in 1940 leaving the facade how we see it today. Today, the castle is the site of the Army Museum. It is accessible by public transport, from Toledo or Madrid.
