Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, Toledo

This site was built in the heart of the Jewish quarter by Catholic Monarchs Isabel and Fernando between 1476 and 1504 to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Toro and demonstrate the authority of their faith.

The Franciscan monastery shows traditional Isabelline (Spanish Gothic) embellishment decorated with the coat of arms of the monarchs, arches and pinnacles. There is a two-level cloister which contains both Gothic and Mudéjar architecture and opens up into a courtyard. Most notable, are the chains dangling from the outside wall that once belonged to Christian prisoners liberated from the Muslims by Fernando II.
