Toledo is just one hour south of the capital city Madrid. It is a historic city, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 because of its extensive monumental and cultural heritage.
Toledo is known by several different names including, the “Imperial City” because it was the centre of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor’s court. You may hear this city being called the “City of Three Cultures” because it beautifully fuses Christian, Muslim and Jewish influences. Its diverse cultural legacy is preserved in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues.
The city has a grand past dating back to the Roman era, and from 542 to 725 AD it was the capital of Spain. Toledo is also known for its traditional crafts such as metalwork and marzipan.
