Nordic museum, Stockholm

The imposing renaissance-style Nordic Museum stands out in size and grandeur from among other buildings on the north-western corner of Djurgården.

A collection of some 1.5 million objects dating from the early 16th century when an independent Swedish state was first established make Nordiska the country’s largest cultural history museum.

Temporary and permanent exhibitions cover a veritable smorgasbord of subjects, including folk art, the native Sámi people, and, remaining very much on brand, home and furniture design.

“The Arctic - Where the Ice is Melting” is an excellent exhibition on all aspects of life 66 degrees north and beyond. Walking through a splitting iceberg, representing the faultline between the past and the present, you hear more directly from the people of a region rich in mythology and science. It knits together a picture of an Arctic with much history to be celebrated and sadly an uncertain future.
