Bears have been part of Bern’s culture since 1191, so it’s no surprise that they are the city’s symbol.
The Bear Pit or ‘‘Bärengraben’’ opened in 1857, but after years of controversy, in 2009 a 6000m2 bear-park was built on the edge of the Old Town on the river Aare. You can still see the Pit, which has become a place of national significance and is still accessible by the bears using a tunnel. There are three Bernese bears to observe and guided tours are also available.
