Built between 1894 and 1902 by architect Hans Wilhelm Auer, its green dome makes this building an easily recognisable part of the Old Town’s skyline and is where Parliament meets.
Auer’s aim was to illustrate the diversity of Switzerland’s culture and materials so stone from 13 of the county’s cantons was used and only Swiss companies were contracted for its construction. It’s 300-meters long, consisting of a central assembly building, two departamental wings and a library. When parliament isn’t in session, free guided tours are available and there’s also a balcony with a view over the river.
