National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

Just off the George IV Bridge in central Edinburgh, the two buildings that make up the National Museum of Scotland are a truly spectacular sight, from the Victorian façade of the old Royal Museum built in 1861, to the modern Museum of Scotland opened in 1998.

Go in the main entrance under the older of the two buildings, and climb up to the grand central hall that rises to the full height of the building. Here you can admire everything from prehistoric jewellery, to modern sculptures, to the stuffed remains of Dolly the sheep.
