Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh

Founded by King David I in 1128, today you’ll find the abbey lying in imposing ruins.

You can’t ignore the impact in the surrounding area, as the abbey guesthouse, which was developed into a royal residence in the 15th-century, later expanded to become the stately Palace of Holyroodhouse that still stands today. Although the abbey’s roof collapsed in the 18th century, you can still wander through the abbey nave and gardens, and admire the east processional doorway (still largely intact).
