Dugald Stewart Monument, Edinburgh

At the summit of Calton Hill overlooking the city of Edinburgh below, you’ll find this striking monument, dedicated to the Scottish philosopher, Dugald Stewart (best known for popularising the Scottish Enlightenment).

Commissioned by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1830, the stone monument was designed by architect William Henry Playfair, and completed in September 1831. You might spot its Grecian resemblance, as it’s based on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, a circular temple of nine columns around an elevated urn. It’s worth the walk up Calton Hill simply for the 180-degree panorama of Edinburgh from the monument, from where you can identify pretty much every major sight in the city.
