Bothwell Castle, Glasgow

Overlooking the River Clyde in between Bothwell and Uddingston, the 13th-century Bothwell Castle looks formidable even today.

Constructed by the ancestors of Clan Murray to guard a strategic crossing point of the Clyde, the castle later played a key role in Scotland's Wars of Independence, although changing hands several times. Make sure you walk to the base of the huge cylindrical donjon (or castle keep), as although it is in ruins today, you can still sense what an imposing sight it once was, standing at 82-feet high when it was first built.
