You can't leave Vienna without going to Prince Eugene of Savoy's magnificent Winter Palace, one of the must beautiful baroque buildings in the world.
In the heart of Vienna, the Winter Palace (Winterpalais) was built as a luxurious residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Over the years it has been owned by the Empress Maria Theresa, before being used by the state as the treasury and the Ministry of the Economy. This baroque gem with lashings of gold leaf and ornate sculptures was finally converted into a cultural center and became part of the Belvedere, with the aim of establishing a dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary art.
Some of the highlights include the Red Room, which has a ceiling with a fresco by the Milanese artist Andrea Lanzani, depicting Hercules Climbing Mount Olympus.
The magnificent gardens complement this highly ornate baroque winter residence, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Unfortunately, it is now closed to the public, but the building is worth seeing, if only from outside.
