Schubert's birthplace is dedicated to the famous Austrian composer Franz Schubert, born in 1797 in this building situated at number 54 of Nußdorfer Straße.
Schubert was born and spent the first four and a half years of his life here. The family apartment is surprisingly modest, with just one living room and a kitchen. But further space in the building has been added to the museum so there’s more to explore than just the family home.
A large part of the top floor is dedicated to Schubert: there is a whole room of portraits of him, as well as drawings and first editions of his work. There are also some of his personal possessions, such as his guitar and his glasses. The round spectacles are a favourite with visitors and are considered to be a bit of a Schubert trademark, so don’t miss those.
The museum documents the artist’s musical development as you would expect, but you’ll also meet his friends and discover the important stages of his personal life.
