In the central square of Vienna, one can find the Church of San Carlo Borromeo (Karlskirke), one of the most beautiful baroque buildings of the city.

Built in the 18th century by demands of the emperor Carlo VI, the church is dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo, archbishop of Milano and patron saint of the plague.  The emperor often promised the construction of it at the end of the serious epidemic of the plague, that hit the city in the beginning of the 1700s.

The façade of the church is characterized by two majestic columns decorated by a low relief and inspired by the Column of Trajan in Rome.  The baroque style dominates the pediment and the giant dome, embellished on the inside by frescos portraying the patron saint.

Walking through the gardens of Karlsplatz, the Church of San Carlo seems to appear between the branches of the trees, while the mirror of water, in front of the majestic building, reflects the façade in all of its details.  It is a unique glimpse in the middle of the beating heart of Vienna.

Advice from Divento…

If you are a lover of the baroque style, don’t lose sight of the inside of the church; the triumph of the columns and the decorations in gold will amaze you in all its richness of color and details.
