Burggarten, Vienna

The construction of the Burggarten was commissioned in 1818 by Francesco I, but only opened to the public in 1919; from then on it became a place for the Viennese to escape from the tourists.

The Burggarten is found in a central position, close to the Hofburg, less than 200 meters from the Theater of the Opera, in the historic center of Vienna.

The construction of the Burggarten was commissioned in 1818 by Francesco I, but only opened to the public in 1919; from then on it became a place for the Viennese to escape from the tourists.

This garden positioned in the heart of the city, with narrow walkways and statues of composers and well-known characters, also hosts a picturesque café from where one is successful to admire the incredible variety of plants and colors comfortably sitting.

On the inside of the garden one can find greenhouses in the art deco style of the Palmenhaus and of the famous Schmetterlinghaus, better known as The Butterfly House.

Mozart Memorial

The front of the memorial to the great composer, created by Viktor Tilgner in 1896, depicts a scene from Don Giovanni - the invitation to the Stone Guest and the latter’s arrival - and the rear shows sixyear-old Mozart playing the piano and his father the violin, and his sister Nannerl singing.

Advice from Divento…

Beyond the most famous statue of Mozart, photographed by thousands of tourists every year, also is one of emperor Francesco Giuseppe, nephew of Francesco II, known as the “Blumenkaiser” or “Emperor Flower” given for his large passion for gardening.  Some of his instruments are also conserved at the Burggarten.
