The temporary exhibition 'Swiss Modernities' organised at the Musée d'Orsay aims to retrace the flourishing artistic period at the end of the 19th century in lively Switzerland.

At the end of the 1890s, a new generation of painters was emerging, including the likes of Cuno Amiet, Giovanni and Augusto Giacometti, Felix Vallotton, Ernest Bieler and Max Buri, who renewed the art of their time.

Trained in France, Germany or in Italy, and in contact with the European avant-gardes, they explored the expressive, symbolic or decorative power of line and colour, taking an interest in subjects drawn from Swiss national history and culture, on the background of the affirmation of the young federal state, born in 1848.

The exhibition is part of a program aimed at highlighting the abundance typical of this decisive phase for the birth of modernity, between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It aspires to discover works never exhibited in France and includes around 70 masterpieces coming mainly from Swiss public and private collections.
