Late Gothic: The Birth of Modernity, Gallery of Old Masters, Berlin: 9 October 2020-14 February 2021

This is the first comprehensive exhibition in a German-speaking country to focus on late gothic art. Inspired by developments in the Netherlands, from the 1430s onwards, artistic expression began to change, evolving into the late gothic art movement.

Light and shade, body and space began to be depicted in a more realistic way. New printing techniques meant that artists could bring this innovative style to a mass audience, contrasting the more traditional painters and their artistic styles that came before this. Despite their mainly religious function, these new images were increasingly seen as works of art in their own right.

With over 100 objects, including works on loan from the renowned Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the contrasts and diversity of different artistic genres can trace the innovations of media forms of the 15th century. As a result, you can experience the full breadth of late Gothic art.
