The Gropius Bau devotes their first comprehensive retrospective in Germany to Yayoi Kusama, one of Japan’s most influential and prominent contemporary artists. Working in close collaboration with Kusuma, they offer an overview of every creative period from the last 70 years, as well as current paintings and the new Infinity Mirrored Room installation. Kusama reached global recognition for her exploration of repeating patterns and structures, and her signature polka dots and mirrored spaces. Her viewers are faced with realms appearing to extend limitlessly outward as the image disintegrates backwards. Since the beginning of her artistic career, in New York in the late 1950s, she combined classical media like painting, sculpture and drawing, with installations and art performances. Kusuma’s work finally returns to Germany, where Kusuma first rose to widespread popularity in Europe in the mid-1960s.
