Don't miss La Maison Rouge's summer exhibition Le Mur, an Alice-in-Wonderland-esque visual tumble into founder and chairman Antoine de Galbert's diverse and fascinating private collection.

Having spent over 10 years putting private contemporary art collections on display to the public, the founder and chairman of the Maison Rouge, Antoine de Galbert, is marking the Foundation’s momentous 10th anniversary by unveiling his own extensive and profoundly personal collection, Le Mur.

What makes this exhibition unique is not only that a third of the immense collection acquired by Antoine de Galbert over 20 years is being revealed, but that all notions of hierarchy have been discretely outlawed. The works have been ordered not according to the inclinations of a curator but by the algorithm of a computer, producing entirely random combinations.

Although mediation isn’t totally absent – a simple swipe of a code on a smartphone enables the selection of a work and eventually its legend – information isn’t a given. This means that we are forced to concentrate on the art itself rather than the distraction of secondary details such as who produced them, when and how much they may be worth. De Galbert’s novel approach demands an immediate, authentic response.

This fresh and experimental concept was sparked while Antoine de Galbert noticed that the layout of his library spawned unlikely contrasts, with catalogues of Jean Dubuffet and Marcel Duchamp for example stacked side by side. So it is, in Le Mur: the exhibition opens with the head of a wild boar by little known Benoît Huot (launched by de Galbert). Later on, François Morellet the father of geometrical abstract art, brushes shoulders with lesser known Russian artist Alexandre Lobanov.

If a level of coherency does exist, it is up to you to interpret it. Visitors may well remark on the reappearing themes of war and violence, our lingering mortality and the frivolity of the human condition. They may also detect the prominence of the art brut of Augustin Lesage and Henry Darger and the omnipresent drawings by Sandra Vasquez de la Horra.

Essentially, Antoine de Galbert’s exhibition is critical of the modern day spoon-fed approach to appreciating art. As the title indicates, Le Mur is a blank page, rejuvenated by each individual interpretation, an ultimately empowering experience.
