Great St. Martin Church, Cologne

In the Old Town, this is one of Cologne’s 12 Romanesque, 12th-century churches.

It is one of the most distinctive features of the city’s skyline and, until the completion of the Cathedral, was one of its most important symbols. During the first-century AD, the site was a Roman sports training complex, and in the following century, was turned into a large warehouse. The remains of both can be seen in the crypt. It has since been a Roman chapel and finally, a Benadictine Monastery. Be sure not to miss the four-turreted tower and impressively large nave.
