Jewellers have been making women happy for over two hundred years in this area of Birmingham, and the award-winning Museum celebrates their craft with a permanent exhibition as testament to their talent. It’s actually built around what used to be the workshops and offices of Smith & Pepper which have been perfectly preserved to allow a brilliant insight into the trade as it was…and still is.

Nothing much has changed around here (well, if it works why bother changing?), and you can still watch a jeweller at work in a traditional factory. The designs have become increasingly ambitious and fancy, however, and contemporary jewellery has carved itself an important niche in the fashion and art world. Things are brought up to date with an exhibition of jewellery created by the designers of today, which really is fabulous. All this goes to prove that diamonds are, and will always be, a girl’s best friend.
