Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, Cambridge

This is the oldest of the University of Cambridge’s museums, dating back to 1728.

The collection has grown over time, from 10,000 to over 2 million fossils, minerals and rocks. The museum spans a natural history of 4.5 billion years, from the meteoritic building blocks of planets, to the fossils of animals and plants which depict the evolution of life in oceans, land and air. The museum is also an important teaching and research resource for the Department of Earth Sciences, as its collections are considered to be a national treasure. The collections are organised into five main categories: Palaeontology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Building Stones and the ‘Woodwardian Collection’. There is also a collection of archive material which contains records from the 17th-century to the present day. There is only a small portion of the collections on display, the remainder is available to see by appointment only.
