Erechtheion, Athens

An ancient Greek temple of Athena and Poseidon on the Acropolis.

Built on the Acropolis in the 5th-century BCE, this temple is devoted to both Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, the god of the sea.The myth goes that the two Olympians competed over who got to be Athens’ patron. Athena won because the people preferred her gift of an olive tree over Poseidon’s salt spring.

Don’t miss the six intricate sculptures of women (the Caryatids) that support the southern portico instead of columns.
