The Manual Alpargatera is an award-winning traditional espadrille workshop which opened just after the Civil War in the 40s. Right in the centre of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, its facade has become an icon of the city.
The espadrille is a footwear with an ancient craft tradition that dates back more than 4000 years. Previously they were considered a type of footwear for rural and lower classes, but the Manual Alpargatera was the first workshop who dared to introduce espadrilles into the world of fashion. Nowadays espadrilles are considered very fashionable items: the shop is a must for well-informed travellers and a regular haunt for many locals. It has a familiar atmosphere and you can choose from a variety of classic and fancy models for women, men and children.
