Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light, Exhibition, The National Gallery, London: 18 March 2019 – 7 July 2019

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

The National Gallery will be hosting over 60 of Sorolla’s works in their ‘Sorolla; Spanish Master of Light’ exhibition. Many of these lustrous paintings have not been seen outside Spain before.

The National Gallery is offering what could be a once in a lifetime opportunity as the last exhibit of the Spanish artist, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923) to grace these shores was over a century ago. It is also the first comprehensive display of Sorolla’s work outside Spain. The exhibit consists of over 60 works, many of which have been sourced from private collections abroad, and span the entirety of the artist’s career.

Sorolla is known for his Impressionist paintings, particularly his rich seascapes, bathing scenes and garden views, as well as his use of light. However, the exhibition will also feature less well-known portraits, landscapes and depictions of Spanish Life.
