Sanctuary of Christ the King, Lisbon

Built in the 1950’s and inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, the monument is set amongst a sprawl of gardens on the southern banks of the Tagus River.

The statue represents Portugal’s religious gratitude for being spared from the horrors of the Second World War, and it’s still visited by Portugese pilgrims today.

The statue of Christ itself is 28 metres high - atop a concrete pedestal of 75 metres - and has its arms extended outwards, facing the city of Lisbon. An observation deck at the base of the statue can be reached by lift.

As it’s just across the Tagus River, you need to take a ferry from the city centre to get there. You get a wonderful view across the estuary and back towards Lisbon on the short trip.
