Copenhagen, originally a Viking fishing village from the 10th century, has been the capital of Denmark since the 15th century, Northern Europe’s major financial centre with the Copenhagen Stock Exchange, and the third richest cities in the world. The city is famous for its unique cityscape with bridges, parks, promenades and waterfronts. The historic centre of the city, the Rococo style Frederiksstaden developed by Frederik V features the most famous attractions, including the Amalienborg, the Royal Residence, and the Marble Church. The famous Copenhagen Opera across the water, the Nyhavn canal with its colorful 17th-18th century houses, and the world’s oldest and longest pedestrian street, the 3.2 km long“Strøget” with its shops, cafés, restaurants are famous landmarks of the city as well.

Other popular attractions include the Tivoli Gardens, the Rosenborg Castle displaying Danish crown jewels, crown regalia, and coronation throne, the Christiansborg Palaces, The Frederick’s Church, the Little Mermaid Statue, and famous museums, including the National Museum of Denmark, the Danish National Gallery-Statens Museum for Kunst with collections from the 12th century, displaying masterpieces by Rubens, Rembrandt, Picasso, Braque, Matisse and other world-renowned artists, the Ny Carlsberg featuring Egyptian, Roman and Greek sculptures, antiques and paintings by Monet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Danish Golden Age painters. The 19th and 20th century Hirschsprung Collection, the contemporary art museum Kunsthal Charlottenborg, and the Arken Museum of Modern Art are popular attractions as well along with the city’s famous sculptures, such as the Little Mermaid on the waterfront, Frederik V on Horseback by Jacques Saly in Amalienborg Square, Abraham-César Lamoureux’s statue of Christian V on Kongens Nytorv, and numerous renowned sculptures and monuments in Rosenborg Castle Gardens. Copenhagen also attracts photographers from around the world each year, hosting the photography competition called “Photomarathon”.
