Castle Rock, Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle perches on top of the appropriately-named Castle Rock in the very heart of the city.

You’ll be astonished to know the rock itself is some 350 million years old, the remains of a volcanic pipe that burst through the surrounding sedimentary rock to form the small mountain that looms over the New Town today. Climb up to the rock’s summit via the Royal Mile and you’ll be 130 metres above sea-level, with panoramic views of Edinburgh right out to the Firth of Forth.
