Oakwell Hall was built in 1583 by John Batt, and is now run as a ‘living museum’ furnished as the Batt family home in the 1690s.
Charlotte Bronte visited the house in the 19th-century many times, and used Oakwell as the inspiration for ‘Fieldhead’ in her classic novel Shirley. The gardens have also been restored, with over 100 acres of parkland for you to explore, including a visitor centre, gift shop, cafe, nature trail, picnic sites and a playground area for children.
