Panaghia Kapnikarea, Athens

An 11th-century church in the middle of a busy street in central Athens.

As you walk along Ermou Street jam-packed with shoppers, you’ll see this small 11th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the middle of the road.

One of the oldest churches in Athens, it was built over an ancient temple. Stop and admire the Byzantine architecture. Once inside, you can admire the Byzantine-style paintings.
