Girecourt Castle, Girecourt-sur-Durbion, France

A beautiful fairytale castle dating back to 1540.

The four fairytale circular towers and their reflections in the moat, are mesmerising. Sadly most of the rest of the castle, which dates back to 1540,  was destroyed by rioting villages in the French Revolution. Today only  two spiral staircases, two monumental fireplaces and some beautifully decorated ceilings remain but recent extensive renovation has saved what remains from collapse.

In contrast to this pure feudal monument is a contemporary piece of art, completed just before the turn of the millennium: a table of 2,000 small gold squares surmounted by the chromosomal symbols of man and womankind, representing humankind having survived the past two millennia.
