Asam Church, Munich

The craziest Baroque church to see in Munich.

Being close to the centre of the Altstadt, Sendlinger Straße is mostly occupied by shops and cafes. If you do find yourself ambling down this street, make sure to look inside the Asam Church. It’s easy to spot, with large boulders protruding from the ground, making up part of its facade, but it sits between the buildings in the rest of the street, rather than by itself, which means you might not think it were a church from simply glancing over its exterior.

Step through the front door and you will be greeted by one the most outlandish baroque interiors that you are likely to find in Munich. Seriously, even if exploring churches is not the kind of thing you want to do on holiday, this one has to be seen to be believed, for little more than the fact that its architects managed to cram so much religious grandeur in to such a small space. Of course, marble and gilt decorations abound in the Asam Church, but whereas in many other churches of such a garish nature you will find yourself with plenty of space to walk around and look up towards lofty ceilings, here you almost feel crammed in by each of its sparkly ornaments. Have a quick walk around the inside, picking out each stone cherub and gaze at the fresco above, then head out in to the Aldstadt to see even more churches if this one has piqued your interest.
