Déflagrations - Dessins d'Enfants, Guerre d'Adultes, Exhibition, Mucem, Marseille: 16 October-1 March 2021

Featuring over 160 drawings produced by children during times of war, this exhibition sheds light on the deep impact of war on children.

Ranging from the First World War to today, this exhibition gives you the chance to see how children use art to express themselves during war. Although the drawings in the exhibition are from a number of different wars over the last century, you’ll notice that emotions such as fear and anxiety are present in nearly all of them, making you think about the psychological impact of war and violence. The drawings are also by children from a wide range of backgrounds, including children in concentration camps and refugee camps as well as schools and health centres, showing you how drawing can act as a coping mechanism during times of war regardless of where you’re from. Not only do the drawings show the suffering that war leads to, but they also remind you that war affects all corners of society.

The exhibition has been put together by collections from universities, libraries and psychologists, and is a tribute to all the children who have ever witnessed the violence of war.
