This evening devoted to George Balanchine, the master of neoclassical dance, is composed of two novel ballets that highlight his Russian academic training and his American influences. Created in 1970, Who Cares? is a suite of dances set to songs by George Gershwin. The effervescence of New York is reflected in the music, choreography and set design against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. A tribute to the grandeur of Imperial Russia, Ballet Impérial was created in 1941 to Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2. George Balanchine brilliantly celebrates the technical virtuosity of academic ballet in the style of Petipa, his 'spiritual father'.
