Island of Ortygia, Sicily

A charming island, better known as the Città Vecchia (Old Town) of mainland Syracuse, with stunning Baroque architecture and mesmerising sea views. It’s ideal for a day trip.

Ortygia may be small, but it is, without question, the historic and cultural heart of Syracuse. Several of the city’s key landmarks can be found in the central Piazza Duomo: most notably, the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia – home to Caravaggio’s Burial of Saint Lucy – and the seventh-century Baroque cathedral. Other unmissable sights include the Fountain of Arethusa, the Temple of Apollo and the Castello Maniace. When you’ve soaked up these architectural wonders, head to the market for a bite to eat or rent a bike and enjoy a picturesque lap of the island.
