Shymbulak ski resort, located a couple of tens of kilometres from Almaty, in the magnificent gorge of the Zailiysky Alatau at an altitude of more than 2200 meters.
Modern chairlifts, an abundance of snow runs and a well-developed infrastructure are the main advantages of the Shymbulak ski resort, attracting thousands of winter sports fans here every year. In addition to excellent skiing areas, there are cafes, restaurants, playgrounds, shops with sports equipment and even a comfortable hotel. From time to time, entertainment programs and exciting competitions for children are held here, as well as professional and amateur international competitions in various winter sports. In addition to the ski slopes, the resort has areas for snowboarding, freestyle, including areas for skating and sledging.
The Shymbulak ski base existed on the slopes of the Zailiysky Alatau back in the 50s of the last century, when all-Union competitions were held here, but it turned into a real ski resort not so long ago. The average thickness of the snow cover here is up to 150 cm, and the number of sunny days per year reaches 90%, which makes staying at the resort as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Snow stays on the slopes from November to May. The height difference in some places reaches 900 meters. The trails are of interest to skiers of all skill levels, including special areas for beginners. Since 2003, an extreme skiing strip has appeared on Shymbulak. Beginners have the opportunity to learn the basics of skiing at a local school.
